On the eve of Disorient's fifth year anniversary we launched our first label compilation. Started in 1997 by as a extension of the Mr Bongo record shop in Shibuya, Tokyo intended as a mechanism to release more Japanese artists in Europe that otherwise couldn't get the exposure due to weighty import prices.
First up is Techno baron Thomas Schumacher who linked up with Japanese vocalist Kaori to turn out their mellow take on of the Inner City's house classic Good Life.
The re-work of UK funksters Atmosfear by production dons Masters At Work still gets regular plays peaktime on the worlds most discerning dancefloors. MAW actually delivered 14 mixes of the track this Unreleased Moody Mix picks out the best elements from all of them.
Spook, who line up Moloko vocalist Roisin Murphy to muscle up a scary version of Grace Jones 'Feel Up' recorded back in '95 on a wet Wednesday afternoon in Yorkshire. All members have since gone on to secure huge pop careers since.
Back to Tokyo and Takada comes through with Ole La from '97 which Muzik mag had in their top 3 tunes from Ibiza that summer. This gets the rub down treatment from Ashley Beedle - house beats with New York latino-style piano licks, an essential marker in the catalogue.
Miyazawa one of Japans most eclectic composer/singers, a man who has picked up many influences on his travels, provides this Brazilian piece remixed by the Rainer Truby Trio. It links a teutonic fusion of both rhythm and club credibility, alongside breakbeat drum and bass maestro's Aquasky (under their Tenth & Parker moniker) with the ubiquitous Mark Murphy on vocals.
Disorient tied up with Tokyo label Flower to present Su-Paka-Pooh, whose organic sound and approach bring a sense of warmth to the mix on their rendition of the jazz dance classic 'Theme De Yo Yo' remixed by Restless Soul aka Phil Asher. Phil takes us to the dance floor with his live emsemble of musicians including sax player Nathan Haines and keyboard wizard Kaidi Tatham and Basil Black 2 Basic on percussion.
Local golden boys Mr Hermano summer classic of 2001, Santana's 'Free As The Morning Sun' from the second album on Disorient of the same name is up next.
Last, but by no means least, the first track released in January 1997 by a young man by the name of Dimitri From Paris. This is his first studio production release and he has since gone on to take the world by storm with his music.
12" samplers were pressed to accompany this album but are now unavailable
